This morning we went up to Wilpena Pound where we caught the shuttle
bus at the TI to the car park 1km from Hills Homestead and Wangara Lookout. We
walked up to the homestead along the “scenic” walk and came back along the top
track which wasn’t quite as picturesque. The walk up to the top lookout was
quite steep but once we were there it was a really nice view over Wilpena Pound.
We decided to walk back to at the TI where we had a nice coffee and then did
the tourist drive that the ranger at the TI recommended. First stop was
Bunyeroo Gorge and then onto Brachina Gorge all on dirt road and along a lot of
dry river beds thru the gorges. The
Flinders Ranges is truly magnificent countryside and our drive was approx. 50
kms with a lot of lookouts along the way.
When we hit the made road again, we stopped to have a fossick along the
Old Ghan Railway which is now all but gone.
Barry & I managed to find 7 “dog spikes” used to hold down the rails
on the old Ghan railway line, we are planning on doing something at home to
keep them as a momento. When we arrived back at Rawnsley Park we headed
straight for the pool for a nice cool down, so nice. Tomorrow we are going up to Blinman and
across to Parachilna where there is a “feral” feast to be had, interesting. I
really enjoyed my day today, I loved being “bush” and on our way home we
managed to see lots of Eagles. Maree was
the first to spot them and then Paul saw 4 gliding just above where we were
parked. Managed to get a couple of
pictures and are hoping that tomorrow when we go past the same spot I can get
some more great photos.
